Reddit is one of the hardest channels to measure. A shopper reads a thread on Monday, remembers your name, and buys on Friday by typing your website into their browser. Your analytics calls that a "direct" visit. Reddit gets no credit. This module shows how to catch more of that effect.
Why Reddit hides in your reports
- Many readers never click a link. They just remember your brand.
- Many subreddits don't allow links at all.
- People often read on their phone and buy later on a laptop.
So no single number tells the whole story. The fix is to use a few signals together, and to compare them against where you started.
Signal 1: tracking links
When you do share a link, add UTM tags. These short labels tell your analytics where a visit came from. Use the same values every time, such as utm_source=reddit, so your reports add up cleanly. Tag each link with the subreddit, so you can see which communities send visitors.
Signal 2: the survey question
Add one question to your checkout or thank-you page: "How did you hear about us?" Include Reddit as an option. This catches the buyers who read a thread and never clicked. It's simple, and it's often the clearest signal you'll get.
Signal 3: branded search and mentions
Watch how many people search for your brand name over time, using a tool like Google Search Console. Also count how often your brand comes up in Reddit threads. If both rise after you start, that's a good sign Reddit is helping.
Set a baseline first
Before you start posting, write down where you stand: survey answers that mention Reddit, branded searches, Reddit visits, and which threads already mention you. Then check the same numbers each month. Change over time is what matters.
Build your links and survey
Tool: Reddit Tracking Link Builder
Keep it the same across posts so reports group cleanly.
Your tracking link
https://www.example.com/standing-desks?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=community&utm_campaign=reddit-organic&utm_content=standingdesks
Use the same lowercase values every time, or your analytics will split one source into several. Only add a link where the subreddit allows it. Many readers never click, so pair links with the survey below.
Post-purchase survey question
How did you hear about us?
- Google search
- YouTube
- Instagram or TikTok
- A friend or family member
- A review site or article
- Podcast
- Other (tell us)
Shuffle the options for each buyer if your survey tool allows it. Keep "Other" last, with a free-text box.
No one signal is perfect. Links, the survey, and branded search together give you a fair picture.
