Reddit marketing takes time or money, and usually both. Before you start, it helps to know how many sales it would take to pay for itself. That number is often smaller than people expect, especially for big purchases.
The three numbers you need
- Average order value. How much a typical customer spends in one order.
- Gross margin. The share of each sale left after the cost of the product. If a $1,000 desk costs you $600 to make and ship, your margin is 40%.
- Monthly cost. What you spend on Reddit each month. That could be an agency plan, or the cost of your own team's time.
The math
First, find the profit from one order: order value times margin. Then divide your monthly cost by that number. The result is how many extra orders per month you need to break even.
For example, say your order value is $800 and your margin is 40%. Each order leaves $320. If you spend $3,200 per month, you need 10 extra orders per month to break even. That's the whole idea.
Why big-ticket products have an edge
When each order is worth hundreds of dollars, a handful of extra sales covers the cost. A brand selling $20 items would need far more. That's why Reddit tends to make the most sense for products people research before they buy.
Be honest about what this shows
A break-even number is a line, not a promise. It tells you what Reddit needs to do. It doesn't tell you that Reddit will do it. A few things to keep in mind:
- Results take time. Showing up in threads can start within weeks. Sales effects usually take longer, often a few months.
- Reddit is hard to track. Many readers never click a link. They remember your name and search for you later. The Reputation course covers how to measure this.
- Repeat buyers add up. This math counts first orders only. If customers come back, each sale is worth more than it shows.
