How Reddit Shapes Big Purchases

Why buyers add "reddit" to their searches, and why those threads rank on Google.

Think about the last time you spent real money on something. Maybe a mattress, a pair of headphones, or a bike. You probably didn't trust the brand's own website alone. You wanted to hear from people who already bought it. For a lot of shoppers, that means Reddit.

Buyers add "reddit" to their searches

Many shoppers type the word "reddit" right into Google. They want honest opinions from real owners, not ads or paid reviews. Here are a few U.S. examples of how often people run these searches each month:

  • "best mattress reddit": about 4,400 per month
  • "headphones reddit": about 2,400 per month
  • "ebike reddit": about 1,600 per month
  • "standing desk reddit": about 1,300 per month

Reddit threads show up on Google, even without the word "reddit"

You don't have to add "reddit" to see Reddit. Google has a "Discussions and forums" feature that shows posts from forums, including Reddit, right in the search results. So a shopper who searches "best standing desk for a small room" may see a Reddit thread on page 1 next to the big review sites.

In 2024, Google and Reddit also announced a deal that gives Google access to Reddit's data. You don't need the details. The point is simple: Reddit content is now part of how people find answers online.

Why this matters most for big purchases

Nobody reads ten threads before buying a toothbrush. But when a product costs $300 or more, people slow down. They compare. They ask "is it worth it?" and "what would you buy instead?" Those questions are exactly what Reddit threads answer.

A single thread can shape a buying decision for months or years, because:

  • It keeps ranking. A good thread can stay on page 1 long after the last comment.
  • It feels honest. Readers trust other owners more than ads.
  • It names names. Commenters recommend specific brands. If yours isn't there, a competitor's might be.

AI answers are a bonus, not the goal

Some AI tools also draw on Reddit when they answer questions. So being part of a helpful thread can help your brand show up there too. But how much these tools use Reddit changes from month to month, and nobody can promise it. Treat it as a side benefit. The main goal is the threads people read on Google today.

The big idea: your buyers are already reading Reddit before they buy. The question is whether your brand is part of the answer they find.

In the next module, you'll build a list of the exact searches your buyers run, and check which Reddit threads rank for each one.
